Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) has asked the government to reconsider its decision to ban TikTok in the country. It justified its opinion on the basis that the nation's economy would be prosperous provided the necessary operational and regulatory steps comply with the law. Instead of banning TikTok, CAN suggests that the government should implement taxation and establish legislation within the commercial framework to improve the overall national economy.
CANβs official statement pointed out the benefits of regulating small and medium enterprises with an opportunity for expansion. Thus, it appealed to the government on the need to reconsider its stand since information and communication technology has brought opportunities and at the same time has its drawbacks. Moreover, they argued that TikTokβs regulation would be fair since it presents an opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises to build up their markets.
The statement also urges the government to undertake dialogues with the technical team to ensure responsible use of all social media platforms in Nepal as private sector representatives who are willing to help.β In this sense, CAN highlights its intention to participate in building a digital Nepal.
For the unversed, CAN initially came into existence in May 1992 and was officially registered in December of that year. In January 2015, it became the CAN Federation, which included professionals, specialists, institutions, and organizations working in the ICT field in Nepal. It serves as a parent organization to different ICT institutions, associations, and people involved in this area of work. The CAN Federation acts independently, neutrally, and without commercial intentions in a service-oriented capacity in the ICT space.
