KAPILVASTU, NEPAL - In a groundbreaking discovery for Nepal's ornithological community, the bird "Whiskered tern",scientifically known as Chlidonias hybrida, has been observed breeding in the Jagdishpur Reservoir, Kapilvastu. This marks the first recorded instance of this species breeding in Nepal.
The bird, which is an irregular visitor and is seen in the spring season as a vagrant species, was spotted by wildlife photographer Pemba Sherpa and tourism enthusiast Sugam Tamrakar. The duo witnessed the Whiskered tern laying eggs in 8 nests around 11:30 on August 26, 2023. Additionally, hundreds of these birds were seen gracefully flying in the vicinity.
The Whiskered tern presence in Nepal dates back to its first recorded sighting in 1971 in Sunsari District. Since then, it has been occasionally spotted in areas like the Koshi Barrage, Chitwan National Park, Pokhara, Kathmandu Valley, and notably, the Jagdishpur Reservoir. Its significance is further highlighted by its mention in Nepal's endangered Red Book.
Veteran bird experts Dr. Hem Sagar Baral and Hathan Chaudhary, who have dedicated years to avian research in Nepal, shared their insights. They noted that while the Whiskered tern has been observed in various Nepali locales, especially as a vagrant species in spring, there had been no prior records of them breeding. Past sightings even included juveniles in the Kathmandu Valley, leading to speculations about their breeding grounds.
Typically found at altitudes between 75 to 915 meters in Nepal, this recent discovery has elicited a mix of excitement and concern among experts. While the breeding observation is a cause for celebration, there's growing apprehension about the safety and return of the newly hatched chicks.
