The government of Nepal has put forth a proposal to open Makalu South East for mountaineering and adventure pursuits. This presents an exciting new challenge and opportunity for climbing enthusiasts across the globe.

Also known as Makalu II, Makalu South East is a notable peak situated in the Himalayas of Nepal. Reaching an impressive height of 7,803 meters (25,600 feet), this mountain is nestled within the confines of the Makalu-Barun National Park and Conservation Area. This protected region covers more than 2,330 square kilometers across the Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha districts.

Positioned in the Mahalangur Himalayas, Makalu South East is roughly 19 kilometers southeast of Mount Everest, sitting on the border between Nepal and China. Num, the closest settlement to its base camp, is around 13.3 kilometers away. Additionally, a police outpost at Khandbari can be found along the caravan route - approximately 75 kilometers from the base camp. The closest army post lies at Sankhuwasabha's district headquarters, a similar distance away.

To reach the mountain from Kathmandu (Nepal's capital city), one can drive to Num and embark on the caravan route beginning there. This trail extends for approximately 75 kilometers via Khandbari, while the actual climb spans around 13.3 kilometers. Altogether, this expedition is estimated to take approximately 50 days.

The proposal to open Makalu South East marks an essential step in establishing Nepal as a top destination for high-altitude mountaineering enthusiasts. It provides seasoned climbers with a fresh challenge while fostering tourism within the area. However, it's important to remember that ascending such high peaks demands proper acclimatization, peak physical condition, and thorough preparation. Presently, the status of this proposal remains under review; stay up-to-date by consulting local authorities or a reputable travel agency for the latest accurate information.
