LGBTIQ+ community champion in Nepal Maya ko Pahichan Nepal has recently announced an unparalleled international conference dedicated to Rainbow Tourism. This breakthrough will get support from the Nepal Tourism Board and will be conducted in April.

Initially planned for January, the conference was rescheduled due to unexpected technical issues. Sunil Babu Pant, a trailblazer as Asia's first openly gay ex-member of parliament, shared the new dates: " The two-day conference has been moved to the 20th of April."

The timing of the event is significant as it is in continuation with the historic ruling on November 29, 2023, by the Nepalese judiciary to legalize same-sex marriages- the first South Asian nation to do so.

Pant expresses optimism about the upcoming conference: This meeting is going to greatly contribute to our national economy while creating employment opportunities for LGBTIQ here by shining the pink tourism.

He also stresses the acute employment challenges confronted by LGBTIQ+ people in their countries of work, more specifically in Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Malaysia, that oppress them with the laws in those areas.

Emphasizing the importance of this sector, Nandini Lahe Thapa from the Nepal Tourism Board comments on rainbow tourism's vital role and advocates robust support for such initiatives in Nepal.

Prominent sexual and gender minority rights advocate and blogger Lex Limbu has taken on the role of principal promoter. He voices his commitment: "I am determined to ensure this conference's success and to elevate Rainbow Tourism's profile in our country."

A study conducted by LGBT Capitalβ€” a corporate advisory specializing in asset management β€” reports that in 2022, global spending power within the LGBTIQ+ demographic was an impressive $4.7 trillion, referred to informally as "pink money." Notably, China boasts rapid growth in this sector with an estimated β€œLGBT GDP" surpassing $872 billion.

This research further estimates that there are approximately 388 million LGBTIQ+ individuals worldwide with at least 75 million residing in China alone. Additionally, it projects global LGBTIQ+ household wealth at $30 trillion and almost $9.5 trillion in the United States.

Pant believes hosting a successful conference demonstrates a destination's welcoming stance toward LGBTIQ+ visitors, potentially sparking an uptick in tourism interest. With immense potential markets like China and India β€” nations where LGBTIQ+ individuals still face societal and governmental hurdles β€” Pant views Nepal as an ideal refuge for this community.
