Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua has been crowned Miss Universe 2023, with this year's pageant breaking numerous established norms and shattering various stereotypes surrounding the contest. The 72nd edition of the international beauty competition will feature two transgender contestants, two mothers, and one plus-sized model from Nepal, all vying for the title.
Jane Dipika Garrett, representing Nepal, is the first plus-sized model to take part in the history of Miss Universe. She was a crowd favorite during the initial rounds. Ultimately, The 22-year-old secured a place within the top 20 but could not advance further.
However, Garrett's participation is more than just about winning. Her identity of being part American and a supporter of body positivism, the model stated that she was speaking for every woman who does not conform to the norms. Garrettβs inclusion in this event despite the initial controversy she created proves body positivity is here to stay and everyone has a place in the spotlight for who they are.
Garrett further discussed candidly how she has struggled with insecurity and a low sense of self-worth in the past, but now loves herself and regards it as a personal success. She also stressed that all women are beautiful in their own special way.
Nevertheless, Garrett is not the only innovative contestant this year. Miss Portugal Marina Machete and Miss Netherlands Rikkie Kolle are among the two transgender women who have made history by participating in the Miss Universe.
Moreover, in a first, a Pakistani, 24-year-old Erica Robin, participated in this year's Miss Universe contestant.
