The prestigious, international-standard rafting competition, "The Great Karnali Quest 2024," spanning 248 kilometers, is scheduled to take place in Nepal from March 8 to 13, 2024. This event is a collaborative effort between the Nepal Association of Rafting Agencies, Nepal River Conservation Trust, and Karnali Basin Conservation Foundation. Rafting in Nepal is always a high thrill given its fast-flowing rivers.

During a recent press conference in Kathmandu, organizers revealed that this extensive 248-kilometer rafting race, titled "The Great Karnali Quest 2024," aims to bolster tourism in the Karnali region. The race will commence from Rakam in the Dailekh district and travel along the Karnali riverbank before concluding at Daulatpur Ghat in the Kailali district, covering an impressive 248 kilometers.

Megh Ale, Chairman of The Great Karnali Quest, expressed at the press conference that countless eyes around the globe are on Karnali for rafting competitions; thus, they have chosen to organize "The Great Karnali Quest" expediently. He emphasized that this event presents an exceptional opportunity to develop Karnali's reputation and encourage both adventurous and sustainable forms of tourism.

He also mentioned that teams wishing to compete in The Great Karnali Quest must pay a fee of USD 450. Furthermore, he anticipates that the prize pool will be USD 3,000 - USD 4,000. He revealed plans for live streaming of the event as well.

Shiva Adhikari, President of the Nepal Association of Rafting Agents, lamented that political interference has adversely impacted tourism promotion efforts. According to Adhikari, despite having a designated budget allocation to carry out initiatives and programs, the board is neglecting to grant required approvals. He maintained that comprehensive support would be essential to accomplish a significant endeavor like The Great Karnali Quest. Adhikari contended that if the tourism board is neglecting its promotional duties, it should be dissolved, allowing the private sector to operate freely.

At present, organizers have confirmed six international teams will participate in the event. It should be noted that the race was initially scheduled between November 23 and 28 but had to be postponed due to a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in western Nepal.
