The prestigious Jumla-Rara Ultra Marathon is set to take the spotlight on April 13 for its fifth edition. Organized by the Karnali Sports Club, the demanding race will embark from Khalanga bazaar, Jumla's district hub, and traverse a picturesque path to the stunning Rara Lake in Mugu.
First organized in 2075 BS (2018 AD), this sporting event has garnered international attention, and runners from various corners of the globe are expected to line up for the 49-kilometer challenge. The participants might be required to carry some basic items like long-sleeved thermal tops and leggings, a windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers, a thermal head covering, a whistle, a head torch, etc. The race course should be marked like last year's and each runner is expected to be extra careful due to additional hazards by way of narrow suspension bridges and mule trains.
The marathon is not just a test of endurance but also serves a larger purpose. It shines a spotlight on the scenic trekking trails between Jumla and Rara Lake while also championing the cultural and athletic spirit of Karnali Province. Its primary goals are to promote domestic and international tourism and to highlight the trekking route connecting Jumla to Rara Lake in Mugu.
Starting at 2,300 meters above sea level in Khalanga and culminating at the breathtaking Rara Lake, situated at an elevation of 2,890 meters, participants will conquer landscapes such as Danphe and Chuchchremara passes along their journey. The course is described as enjoyable with a mix of uphill and downhill sections, featuring three particularly steep climbs - Danphe (3500m), Kavra cave, Bhulbhule (2950m), and Chuchemara (4017m).
Over a thousand athletes are expected to compete in this high-altitude race which boasts attractive cash prizes for the top finishers – Rs 100,000 for the winner, Rs 75,000 for the first runner-up, and Rs 50,000 for the second runner-up, which is roughly equivalent to USD 751, USD 563 and USD 375 respectively.
The entry fees are set thoughtfully to encourage wide participation: Rs 14,500 for runners from SAARC countries, Rs 16,000 for international runners outside SAARC nations, and a subsidized amount of Rs 7,000 for local Nepali competitors, roughly equivalent to USD 109, USD 120 and USD 59 respectively. To simplify participation, the organizers have initiated an online application process.
The fourth edition of the race was held on April 24, 2023.
