Currently, Nepal is alive with the lively and jubilant festivities of Dashain, a 15-day event that bears great cultural and religious importance. Today, Nepalese people will celebrate its 10th day, which is also the focal point of the festival. On this day, known as Vijaya Dashami, the younger family members receive Tika and Jamara and blessings from their elders, which is a symbolic gesture of transferring power, strength, and wisdom. Relatives also visit each other's houses to receive Tika and blessings.
Dashain, a major celebration in Nepal, epitomizes the triumph of good over evil. Usually taking place in September or October based on the lunar calendar, the festival lasts for 15 days. It is observed to honor the day when Goddess Durga defeated demons known as Mahishasura, who were threatening the world of the gods, or devaloka. Following a ten-day battle, Durga emerged victorious, leading to Dashain being celebrated. The tenth day, Vijaya Dashami, signifies victory over evil and is joyfully marked by applying Tika and Jamara. Each day honors different historical aspects of Dashain's history within Hinduism, creating a rich and reflective festival.
For the first nine days of Dashain, individuals worship various forms of Goddess Durga. Day one is called Ghatasthapana; on this day, barley seeds are planted in a small pot with soil where they will remain until the tenth day. On day seven or Fulpati, flowers and banana stalks are brought into the home. On the eighth day, Maha Ashtami, animal sacrifices are made to appease Goddess Durga. Meanwhile, Maha Navami is dedicated to worshipping Durga's weapons on day nine.
Fundamentally, Dashain focuses on family reunions, gatherings, and blessings. As people return to their hometowns and villages to join in the celebrations alongside family members, it fosters unity. People also clean, paint, and decorate their homes during this time. Throughout Dashain, feasting, relaxation, and indulgence play an important role as people savor various traditional dishes.
Historical records show that Nepal has been celebrating Dashain since 1375. Many believe that the festival commenced during King Prithvi Narayan Shah's reign in the 18th century. Rooted in Hindu mythology and beliefs, Dashain celebrates the gods and goddesses' victory over demons, a triumph of good over evil, honoring Goddess Durga as well as Lord Rama. The festival serves to preserve and promote Nepalese culture and traditions both nationally and globally among Nepalese diaspora communities. For tourists in Nepal during Dashain, it's a unique opportunity to experience the country's rich cultural heritage firsthand as they immerse themselves in the lively celebrations.
