Nepal beat Singapore by eight wickets on their first match in the Asia Qualifier for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 to be held in the West Indies and USA.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Singapore made 145 for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. Opener Rohan Rangarajan top-scored for Singapore with 46 from 30 balls, which included nine fours and one six. Manpreet Singh scored 24 of 26 balls, and Aryaveer Chaudhary scored 37 from 26 balls. Besides these, there were no other notable contributions from the Singapore batsmen.
All Nepalese bowlers bowled well. Abinash Bohara took three wickets but was a bit expensive giving away 43 runs from his four overs. Probably Nepal's most known player around the world Sandeep Lamichhane marked his comeback with good four overs in which he took two wickets and gave away just 18 runs. Gulshan Jha and Karan KC both picked up two wickets each giving away 21 and 36 runs respectively. Sompal Kami also bowled very good four overs giving away just 21 runs, though he was not amongst the wickets. In total, Nepal used five bowlers.
Chasing the target of 146, Nepal made a great start with the opening partnership of 84 runs between Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh in just 9.1 overs. After Sheikh got out for 27, Captain Rohit Paudel joined Bhurtel and there was no stopping of run flow. Bhurtel got out for 74, when the target was just five runs away. Captain Rohit Paudel remained not out with 35 runs from 24 balls.
Singapore used six bowlers in total but none were effective. Anantha Krishna and Akshay Puri took one wicket each, but that was nothing any good to restrict the Nepalese batsmen. Kushal Bhurtel was declared player of the match for his 74 runs.
In the other games played today, UAE beat Baharain by five wickets chasing the target of 136 runs; Oman beat Malaysia by 32 runs and Hong Kong beat Kuwait by 16 runs.
Nepal will next play Malaysia tomorrow and Singapore's next game is against Oman, which will also be played tomorrow.
