Talented Nepalese golfer Subhash Tamang secured an impressive 9&7 victory against India's Rohit in the 36-hole match play final, claiming victory at the IGU 122nd All-India Amateur Golf Championship in Kolkata on Sunday. Despite beginning slowly, Tamang, who has been honing his skills at the Tarun Sardesai Golf Academy near Kolar for the past two years, discovered his optimal performance and effortlessly defeated his competitor.
Having an even score after 14 holes, Tamang, renowned for his exceptional mental fortitude, diligently seized the 15th, 16th, and 18th holes, resulting in a 3-up lead by the end of the first 18 holes. During the latter half of the match, following a temporary setback on the 20th hole, the unstoppable 22-year-old amateur surpassed his 24-year-old adversary with ease.
Tamang expressed his elation after winning this esteemed championship: "I'm thrilled to have won this prestigious title. It has always been my aspiration to win this championship. This year marked my second attempt, and I am simply overjoyed that I successfully reached my goal. Furthermore, being the first Nepalese player to win the Indian National Championship feels incredibly special."
Reflecting upon the foundation of his triumph, Tamang, who narrowly defeated top-seeded South African Altin van der Merwe during Saturday's semifinals, attributed his success to his diligent training at TSG Academy: "I believe my preparation at TSG Academy played an instrumental role in my victory. We focused on physical, technical, as well as mental enhancements. Consequently, I arrived at this tournament feeling like a polished golfer and witnessed my game evolve as each round progressed."
