Recently, the remote villages in Taplejung have experienced enhanced internet connectivity due to new wireless services being introduced. Upgraded and newly constructed wireless towers have provided improved internet access in these areas. The locals, who previously lacked mobile service, have embraced this development with great excitement.

In September last year, Nepal Telecom launched a wireless service through a remote tower located in Lovadanda area of Phaktanglung. This tower expanded communication coverage to Phaktanglung's rural regions, offering better access to internet services. The wireless service now enables residents from Lelpek, Batase, Madibung, Phembo, Lelpe, Lungthung, Sekathum Lavajin, Kisongma, Amjilesa, Tapethok, Yasang, Sotlima, and Ikhabuk to enjoy internet connectivity as stated by the Taplejung District Telecommunications Office.

Rabin Saamra Limbu, Deputy Chairperson of Phaktanglung Rural Municipality shares that the local residents directly benefit from the improved service. The initiative also assists thousands of tourists visiting the Kangchenjunga region. Rajan Limbu, Chairperson of the Rural Municipality states that the service additionally supports various government and non-government organizations in delivering services to this area.

In fiscal year 2074 BS (2017/2018 AD), Nepal Telecom extended its 2G service to Murungla Danda area within the municipality, after which mobile services were expanded to the area. However, 2G was found to be less effective; as a result, after complain by locals about the ineffectivity, the area was upgraded to 4G service.

The Chairperson confirms that most wards in the lower part of the rural municipality—including Ward Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, Savadin, Khejenim, Lingkhim, and Ikhabuka—have already transitioned to 4G internet service. Necessary equipment has been transported for the service expansion and initial surveys have been carried out in preparation for tower installation. Moreover, the rural municipality has made arrangements to set up towers in Hilikharke, Ward Number 7 of the same rural municipality. Surveys for tower installation have also commenced in other areas. The Chairperson expects wireless internet service expansion to reach all parts of Phaktanglung Rural Municipality within a year.

Locals report that communication has become easier since the service expansion. Many families have members residing in other cities or countries for work or education, and the faster internet connection now allows them to stay connected. Starting from Wednesday, wireless internet service has extended to the eastern area of Taplejung Rural Municipality as well. Consequently, internet services continue to reach even more remote areas across the region.
