There's good news for Nepalis in India from the Nepali embassy – getting an Indian SIM card just got a whole lot easier. The announcement was made by the Nepali Ambassador to India, Shankar Sharma, on Tuesday morning.
It used to be tough for Nepali folks to get their hands on a SIM card in India. Regulatory red tape meant it was off-limits unless you had a long-term job or an Aadhaar card. Short-term visitors were out of luck, often having to ask local friends in India to lend them a SIM using their ID.
But times have changed, Sharma says. Now, you just need to show something like your Nepali passport or voter ID and you're set to get a SIM card. This big shift is thanks to the embassy's hard work talking to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, pushing for easier access for their citizens.
Ambassador Sharma can't help but be pleased with how things turned out: "Now, Nepalis can easily pick up an Indian SIM card with just their documents like passports or voter cards. We've closed the chapter on those old restrictions, and it's all because we reached out formally."
Let's now dive into what this change might mean – the good and maybe not-so-good:
On the bright side:
- Those from Nepal traveling to India for a short duration now will feel convenient for communication purposes.
- This step will contribute to the growth of mutual respect and cooperation.
On the flip side:
- There may be some concern about privacy since they have to give up personal data for SIM. It begs the question: Do I trust that data, or could it be misused?
- Even with new rules, there could be delays if the relevant documents are not properly in order, and Nepalis may have problems retrieving their SIM cards.
- And with every change in policies there comes some amount of confusion – determining the exact steps which need to be taken may not be easy and this can lead to delays.
