On Wednesday, a one-day "India-Nepal Economic Partnership Summit 2023" was organized in Birgunj, Nepal to discuss ways to further strengthen the bilateral economic partnership between the two countries.
The event was jointly organized by the Consulate General of India in Birgunj and the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BICCI).
The India-Nepal Centre of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) hosted the second edition of the India-Nepal Economic Partnership Summit 2023.
In his opening remarks, Session Chair Atul K Thakur, Secretary of the India-Nepal Centre at PHDCCI, emphasized the need for a collaborative approach between government and industry stakeholders to leverage the immense potential and address challenges in the post-pandemic era through India-Nepal economic cooperation.
Thakur stated that as the friendliest neighbor of India, Nepal has an important role to play in the South Asia region, especially as SAARC has been largely dysfunctional over the years. He said it is time for friendly neighbors India and Nepal to come forward and explore opportunities for sub-regional cooperation.
Key discussion themes at the summit included charting a new roadmap to accelerate India-Nepal cooperation, promoting industrial development, revisiting bilateral trade policies, expanding bilateral and sub-regional economic cooperation, and improving border area development and connectivity.
In his remarks, BICCI President Anil Kumar Agrawal recounted Birgunj's significance as a major Nepali trade hub and BICCI's long-standing contributions to advancing India-Nepal economic ties through industry and trade.
Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker Devi Sahai Meena, Consul General of India in Birgunj, reassured continued Indian support to boost economic cooperation between the two countries. He emphasized that India has been a key development partner for Nepal through policy and implementation.
The deliberations aimed to open new business opportunities in key sectors while providing an impetus to cross-border trade near the crucial India-Nepal border at the economic center of Birgunj.
The summit created a joint platform to enable deeper economic engagement and channel Indian investments into Nepal through sustained industry-government convergence based on mutually beneficial bilateral ties.
