The process of installing Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras has commenced at Thamel, a renowned tourist hotspot in Kathmandu. Under the initiative of the Thamel Tourism Development Council and with backing from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari, these cameras are being set up along all major roads within Thamel.

Bhabishwor Sharma, the Council Chairperson, revealed that the installation of CCTV cameras aims to enhance the cleanliness, aesthetics, safety, and organization of Thamel while reinforcing its peace and security. As of now, 80 CCTV cameras have been installed at key locations such as Lainchaur Marg, Chhetrapati Marg, Nursing Chowk Marg, Chaksibari Marg, Satghumti Marg, JP Line Marg, and Paryatan Marg within the Thamel area.

Sharma informed that efforts are ongoing to set up a total of 112 CCTV cameras, including four larger units. Preceding the installation process in Thamel, representatives from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Kathmandu Valley Police Office, and Thamel Tourism Development Council conducted a thorough study to determine the number of CCTV cameras needed in this area.

Sahadev Dhamala, Council Vice-Chair, stated that these CCTV systems would significantly aid in curbing criminal activities occurring in Thamel. The Council was founded in 2047 BS with a mission to develop the Thamel region and currently consists of more than 2,000 property owners and business entrepreneurs in this locale.
