The Thamel and Durbarmarg neighborhoods will now embrace a bustling nightlife as they commence operations 24 hours a day. In sync with the New Year 2081 of the lunar calendar, the Kathmandu District Administration Office has implemented a 'Code of Conduct and Standards-2080,' paving the way for these key locales in Nepal's capital to offer round-the-clock services.
Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane spearheaded this initiative, which was endorsed by Kathmandu's Chief District Officer Jitendra Basnet. Basnet assures that robust security measures are in place to safeguard the vibrant districts as they transition to operate as full-time commercial hubs.
In addition to businesses staying open throughout the night, transportation services such as city buses, taxis, and ride-sharing platforms will be readily available to address nighttime travel needs.
Leaders of local development councils have voiced strong support for this shift. Bhabiswar Sharma, Chairperson of Thamel Tourism Development Council, believes this move will fortify Thamel and Durbarmarg's economies. Meanwhile, Sanjay Adhikari, Coordinator of the Durbarmarg Development Board, anticipates that keeping markets open all night will cast a favorable impression on an international scale.
An event featuring Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Lamichhane was also organized to mark this significant change in operation hours.
