Barun Tse, sometimes referred to as Jomo Tseringma, is a striking mountain peak nestled within the Himalayas' Barun range. Found in Nepal's Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha districts within Province 1, this awe-inspiring peak towers at an impressive altitude of 7,129 meters (or 23,464 feet). Geographically, Barun Tse's coordinates are 27° 52' 17" latitude and 86° 58' 58" longitude. Colin Todd and Geoff Harrow proudly made the peak's first ascent on May 29, 1954.
Situated in eastern Nepal's Khumbu region, Barun Tse boasts four incredible peaks and is surrounded by the Hunku Glacier to the south, the Barun Glacier to the east, and the Imja Glacier to the northwest. To reach Barun Tse's base camp, explorers must traverse the enchanting wilderness of Hinku valley and journey through Mera La within Makalu Barun's remote valleys.
In case of emergencies during such expeditions, the nearest support centers—Namche police post, Namche army post, and Namche health center—lie just 39.1 kilometers away. Meanwhile, Dhusum (16.9 kilometers) and Lukla (54 kilometers) are the closest settlements.
Climbers looking to navigate Barun Tse should be aware that royalty fees vary according to both season and nationality. For Nepalese climbers specifically, fees stand at NRs 6000 in spring, NRs 3000 in autumn, and NRs 1500 in winter/summer. In comparison, fees for foreign climbers are USD 500 during springtime climbs, USD 250 for autumn treks, and USD 125 for winter/summer ascents.
To kickstart your Barun Tse adventure, you can fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and choose between two caravan routes: the 55.7-kilometer route through Ambulapcha La (from Lukla-Thaknag-Merala-Panch Pokhari) and the 54-kilometer path via Mera La (from Tumlingtar-Tashgaun). With a climbing route length spanning 2.7 kilometers, the entire expedition will likely take around 35 days to complete.
