The Upper Mustang trek is an adventurous journey that takes you through the remote region of Mustang, situated in the northern part of Nepal. The trek starts with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Jomsom, a small town located in the Mustang district of Nepal. From Jomsom, you'll head to Kagbeni, a beautiful village situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Kali Gandaki and the Jhong Khola. Kagbeni is also the gateway to Upper Mustang and is known for its traditional houses, narrow alleys, and ancient monasteries.
From Kagbeni, the trail ascends through a desert-like landscape, passing through villages like Chele, Syangboche, and Ghemi. These villages are famous for their unique mud-brick houses, monasteries, and prayer wheels. As you climb higher, the landscape changes, and you'll be greeted by towering peaks, including Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri.
After Ghemi, you'll cross the Nyi La Pass (4,010m), which offers stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan range. The trail then descends to the beautiful village of Ghami, famous for its ancient monastery, chortens, and prayer flags. The next stop is the walled city of Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang. The city is known for its unique architecture, with white-washed houses, narrow alleys, and a beautiful palace. You'll also visit the Thubchen Gompa, a 15th-century monastery that houses ancient Buddhist scriptures and stunning wall paintings.
From Lo Manthang, the trail heads to the northern border of Nepal, where you'll reach the settlement of Yara, situated at an altitude of 3,650m. Yara is a small village that offers stunning views of the Tibetan plateau and is known for its unique landscape, with eroded cliffs and rock formations. The trail then continues to the beautiful village of Tangge, situated at an altitude of 3,370m. Tangge is known for its unique architecture, with traditional houses and ancient monasteries.
The last leg of the trek takes you to the village of Muktinath, one of the most sacred places for both Hindus and Buddhists. The village is situated at an altitude of 3,800m and is known for its ancient temple and natural hot springs. From Muktinath, you'll descend to Jomsom, where the trek ends.
