Rara Lake - Our Recommendation

As you plan your trek to Rara Lake, keep in mind these do's and don'ts to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Do's:

Acclimatize slowly to the altitude: Rara Lake is located at an altitude of around 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) above sea level. To prevent altitude sickness, take your time and allow your body to adjust to the high altitude gradually.

Hire a local guide or porter with knowledge of the flora and fauna: Rara Lake is home to a variety of unique plant and animal species, and having a guide who can identify them can enhance your experience.

Be prepared for harsh weather conditions: The temperature at Rara Lake can drop as low as -5°C (23°F) at night, and unexpected snowfall and strong winds are also possible. Make sure to bring warm clothing and a waterproof jacket to protect yourself from the elements.

Respect the local culture and customs: The majority of people in the Rara Lake area are from the Mugu district and follow the Hindu and Buddhist religions. Be mindful of local customs and show respect to the locals you encounter on your trek.

Carry and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated: Trekking in high altitudes can be physically demanding, and dehydration can be a serious concern. Plan to carry at least 2-3 liters of water per day and drink frequently to stay hydrated.

Don'ts:

Do not disturb the wildlife or their habitat: Rara Lake is home to many unique and endangered species such as the Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, and Musk Deer. Make sure to keep a safe distance and avoid causing any harm or disturbance.

Do not stray from designated trails: The terrain around Rara Lake can be rugged and challenging, and it's important to stay on designated trails to avoid getting lost or injured.

Do not trek alone: The Rara Lake area is remote, and unexpected events can happen. Always trek with a partner or group and inform someone of your whereabouts.

Do not underestimate the weather conditions: As mentioned before, Rara Lake can experience sudden changes in weather, including snowfall and strong winds. Be prepared with appropriate gear and clothing to stay warm and dry.

Do not litter or leave any waste behind: Proper waste management is essential to preserve the environment and keep the region clean and healthy. Make sure to carry out all trash and dispose of it properly when you reach a designated waste disposal area.
