The Khopra Ridge Trek, also known as the Khopra Danda Trek, is a less crowded but equally spectacular alternative to the more popular treks in the Annapurna region. The trek starts from Nayapul, a small town located about an hour and a half drive from Pokhara. From there, the trail leads through lush green forests and terraced fields before reaching the picturesque village of Ghandruk, which is inhabited by the Gurung community.
Continuing on, the trail passes through Tadapani and Dobato, offering stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The highlight of the trek is the Khopra Ridge, a viewpoint located at an altitude of 3,660 meters, which offers panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks, including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre.
After spending a night at the Khopra Ridge, the trail continues to the holy Khayer Lake, which is located at an altitude of 4,660 meters. The lake is considered sacred by the locals, and it is believed that taking a dip in its cold waters can wash away sins.
From the Khayer Lake, the trail leads back to the Khopra Ridge and then descends to the beautiful village of Swanta. This village is inhabited by the Gurung and Magar communities and offers a glimpse into their unique culture and way of life.
The trek then continues through the charming villages of Chistibung and Chitre before reaching the town of Ghorepani. Ghorepani is a popular stop for trekkers on the Annapurna circuit and offers stunning views of the Himalayas from its viewpoint, Poon Hill.
From Ghorepani, the trek descends to Nayapul, where it started. The Khopra Ridge Trek is a moderate trek that can be completed in about 10-12 days. The trail is well-marked, and there are plenty of teahouses and lodges along the way for accommodation and meals.
