Helambu - Permit & Regulation

The Helambu trek is a stunning and relatively easy trek that takes you through the lush forests and traditional villages of the Helambu region in Nepal. This trek offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains and a chance to experience the rich culture and traditions of the Sherpa and Tamang people who call this area home.

Permits:

Langtang National Park Entry Permit: All visitors must obtain this permit to enter the Langtang National Park, which includes the Helambu region. You can get the Langtang National Park Entry Permit from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or from the entrance gate of the Langtang National Park in Dhunche. The permit costs NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals and NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals.

Shivapuri National Park Entry Permit: This permit is required for visitors who enter the Shivapuri National Park, which is located on the outskirts of Kathmandu and is part of the Helambu trek. You can obtain the Shivapuri National Park Entry Permit from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or from the entrance gate of the Shivapuri National Park in Budhanilkantha. The permit costs NPR 500 for foreign nationals and NPR 200 for SAARC nationals.

Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card: The TIMS Card is a mandatory permit for all trekkers in Nepal. You can obtain the TIMS Card from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or from the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN). The TIMS Card costs NPR 1,000 for individual trekkers and NPR 2,000 for group trekkers.

Regulations:

Guide: Starting from 2023, it is mandatory for all visitors to hire a licensed guide for the Helambu trek. A guide can provide valuable information about the local culture, environment, and ensure that you stay safe throughout your trek.

Environmental awareness: It is essential to respect the environment and minimize your impact. This includes not littering, not disturbing wildlife, and staying on designated trails.

Respect local culture: The Helambu region is home to the Sherpa and Tamang people, who have a rich culture and traditions. It is vital to respect their way of life, dress modestly, and ask for permission before taking photographs of people or religious sites.

Altitude sickness: Although the Helambu trek is not a high-altitude trek, it is essential to take time to acclimatize properly to avoid altitude sickness. It is recommended to take at least one acclimatization day during your trek.

Emergency evacuation: It is important to have an emergency evacuation plan in place in case of any accidents or medical emergencies. Make sure to have adequate insurance coverage and carry a fully charged mobile phone with you at all times.
