Gokyo Lake - Permit & Regulation

If you are planning to visit Gokyo Lake, which is located in the Gokyo Valley of the Everest region in Nepal, there are certain permits and regulations that you need to be aware of.

Permits:

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: This permit is required for all visitors entering the Everest region, which includes the Gokyo Valley. You can obtain the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or from the entrance gate of the Sagarmatha National Park in Monjo. The cost of the permit is NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals and NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: This permit is required for all trekkers entering the Khumbu region, which includes the Gokyo Valley. You can obtain the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or from the Monjo checkpoint. The cost of the permit is NPR 2,000 per person.

Regulations:

Guide: Although it is not mandatory to hire a licensed guide for the Gokyo Lake visit, it is recommended to hire one for safety and better understanding of the local culture and environment.

Environmental awareness: As with all natural areas, it is important to respect the environment and minimize your impact. This includes not littering, not disturbing wildlife, and staying on designated trails.

Respect local culture: The Gokyo Valley is home to the Sherpa people, who have a rich culture and traditions. It is important to respect their way of life, dress modestly, and ask for permission before taking photographs of people or religious sites.

Altitude sickness: The altitude in the Gokyo Valley can be high, and it is important to take time to acclimatize properly to avoid altitude sickness. It is recommended to take at least two acclimatization days during your visit.
