The Everest Base Camp trek starts in Lukla, a small town located in the Solu Khumbu region of Nepal. Lukla can be reached by a short flight from Kathmandu. From Lukla, the trek follows the Dudh Kosi River and passes through several Sherpa villages, including Phakding, Monjo, and Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar is the largest village in the region and serves as the main trading center for the Sherpa people. It also offers stunning views of Mount Everest and other peaks in the region.
Continuing on, the trek crosses the Imja Khola River and heads towards Tengboche, home to the famous Tengboche Monastery. The monastery is the largest in the Khumbu region and provides stunning views of Mount Everest and Ama Dablam.
After leaving Tengboche, the trek descends to the village of Pangboche, the highest year-round settlement in the region. From here, the trek continues up the Khumbu Valley towards Dingboche, a small village surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery.
Next, the trek reaches Lobuche, a small village situated below the famous Khumbu Glacier. From here, trekkers can hike to Kala Patthar, a peak with spectacular views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse.
Finally, the trek reaches Gorak Shep, the last village before reaching Everest Base Camp. From here, trekkers can hike to the base camp itself, which sits at an altitude of 5,364 meters (17,598 feet) at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall.
On the return journey, the trek follows the same route back to Lukla, with stops at the same villages along the way. The trek also offers the opportunity to visit other attractions in the region, such as the Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde, and the Everest View Hotel, which provides stunning views of Mount Everest and the surrounding peaks.
